New Zealand suffered a second major injury setback on the eve of the Champions Trophy 2025, with fast bowler Lockie Ferguson ruled out due to a foot injury.
The 33-year-old pacer sustained the injury last month while playing in a T20 league in the UAE and will be replaced by Kyle Jamieson in the squad. Ferguson, a key figure in New Zealand’s bowling attack, has taken 99 wickets in 65 ODIs.
His absence comes as another blow for the Black Caps, who had already lost pacer Ben Sears to a hamstring injury. Sears was earlier replaced by Jacob Duffy in the 15-man squad.
Coach Gary Stead Reacts
New Zealand head coach Gary Stead expressed his disappointment over Ferguson’s withdrawal:
“We’re really disappointed for Lockie. He is a key part of the bowling group and brings a lot of major tournament experience. We know how much he was looking forward to representing New Zealand at another major event.”
Jamieson, 30, has played 13 ODIs between 2020 and 2023 and will now step in to strengthen New Zealand’s pace attack.
Champions Trophy Group Stage
New Zealand will face hosts and defending champions Pakistan in the tournament opener on Wednesday in Karachi.
The tournament features eight teams divided into two groups:
- Group A: New Zealand, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh
- Group B: Australia, England, South Africa, Afghanistan
Despite the setbacks, New Zealand will aim to make a strong start in the highly competitive event.
