In a deeply disturbing incident, a newborn baby was reportedly sold by parents to pay a hospital bill in Karachi, shedding light on the growing economic and healthcare crisis affecting low-income families across Pakistan.
According to local media reports, the couple — residents of a low-income area — was unable to afford the cost of delivery and postnatal care at a private hospital. Desperate and unable to clear their dues, they allegedly agreed to hand over their newborn to a third party in exchange for payment to settle the bill.
The shocking case came to light after a social worker tipped off authorities, prompting an investigation by the Karachi Police and Social Welfare Department. Law enforcement officials have since launched a probe to verify the details and trace both the baby and the individuals involved.
Police sources said, “We are investigating the matter to determine whether the child was sold under coercion or voluntarily. Strict legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty.”
Human rights organizations have condemned the incident, calling it a tragic reflection of poverty, lack of healthcare access, and exploitation of vulnerable families.
“This heartbreaking situation underscores the urgent need for government intervention to ensure that no parent has to make such a choice due to financial hardship,” said a representative from a local NGO.
Authorities have pledged to recover the baby and provide financial and legal support to the affected family.
