Christopher Nolan’s epic drama “Oppenheimer,” centered around the inventor of the atomic bomb, dominated the 80th Golden Globes on Sunday, securing five prestigious awards, including Best Drama and Best Director. The film also earned acting accolades for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr., as well as Best Original Score.
Emma Thomas, the film’s producer and Nolan’s wife, commended the groundbreaking nature of “Oppenheimer,” describing it as “unlike anything anyone else is doing.” Murphy, who portrayed J. Robert Oppenheimer, praised Nolan as a “visionary director,” while Downey Jr., playing the bitter rival, hailed the movie as a “masterpiece.”
Despite the buzz surrounding “Barbenheimer” – the combined phenomenon of “Oppenheimer” and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie – the latter missed out on the Best Comedy Film honor, losing to the surreal bildungsroman “Poor Things.” Barbie, a satirical take on misogyny and female empowerment, secured two awards for Best Song and a newly created trophy for Box Office Achievement.
“We would like to dedicate this to every single person on the planet who dressed up and went to the greatest place on Earth, the movie theatres,” said Margot Robbie, star and producer of Barbie. The film’s director, Greta Gerwig, added her thanks to “all the Barbies and Kens in front of and behind the screen.”
The 80th Golden Globes marked a comeback for the awards show after a tumultuous period of boycotts, controversies, and declining audiences. Private investors, including US billionaire Todd Boehly, took over the Golden Globes, bringing in a wider pool of overseas critics to choose this year’s winners.
The ceremony also celebrated notable achievements in television, with “Succession” dominating the drama categories and “The Bear” sweeping the comedy categories. The limited series “Beef” earned accolades for Steven Yeun, Ali Wong, and Matthew Macfadyen.
As the industry gears up for the Oscars, the Golden Globes provide a timely boost, setting the stage for the upcoming awards season. The 94th Academy Awards nominations voting begins this Thursday, with the ceremony scheduled for March 10.
