MIRPURKHAS: In a distressing incident, more than 100 goats reportedly died after consuming poisonous plants in Digri taluka, Mirpurkhas. Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar has directed authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Home Minister’s Spokesperson Sohail Ahmed Jokhio, the deaths are being taken seriously, with an inquiry committee led by the Crime Investigation Agency’s Deputy Superintendent of Police already in place. “District Mirpurkhas police are actively investigating the case. A first information report is being registered, and all aspects are being probed,” Jokhio told Dawn.com.
Jokhio suggested that the deaths could stem from “personal enmity” targeting the goats’ owners, adding to the complexity of the case. The home minister has instructed the senior superintendent of police in Mirpurkhas to provide a detailed report and ensure stringent legal action against anyone found responsible.
This incident highlights a troubling trend of animal cruelty in Pakistan. In June, cases such as a landlord mutilating a camel in Sanghar and a disturbing video of men throwing a dog from a terrace in Karachi sparked outrage. Another case from Rawalpindi involved a donkey whose ears were severed, reportedly linked to a land dispute.
The Sindh government continues to face growing calls for stricter animal protection laws and enforcement to curb such incidents. As the Mirpurkhas inquiry unfolds, activists hope the case will lead to stronger actions to prevent similar tragedies.
