Severe flooding caused by relentless heavy rains over the past several days has claimed more than 60 lives across three Indian states, officials reported on Monday. The affected states include Gujarat in the west and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the south.
Gujarat has been the hardest hit, with over 45 reported fatalities. The state has been grappling with devastating floods since August 27, prompting the deployment of the Indian Army. Troops equipped with specialized equipment are tirelessly working around the clock to assist in rescue operations and provide aid to those stranded in flood-affected areas.
In Andhra Pradesh, the death toll has risen to 10. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has vowed to expedite relief efforts, urging residents to stay resilient in the face of the disaster. “I wish the affected people to be brave,” Naidu stated, underscoring the state’s commitment to supporting those in need.
Telangana has also suffered significant losses, with nine reported deaths. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced a financial assistance package of 500,000 Indian Rupees (approximately $5,960) to the families of those who have lost their lives due to the floods. Reddy has also called on the federal government to classify the flooding as a “national calamity,” which would unlock additional resources and support for the affected regions.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He also urged Congress leaders and workers to mobilize resources to aid in the ongoing relief and rescue operations. “I urge Congress leaders and workers to mobilize all available resources to support the ongoing relief and rescue efforts,” Gandhi wrote on X.
As the rains continue, authorities are on high alert, with efforts intensifying to provide relief and prevent further loss of life.
