The Khunjerab Pass, the vital trade gateway between Pakistan and China, has been officially closed for a four-month winter break, starting from November 30. This annual closure is due to severe weather conditions, as heavy snowfall makes the mountainous route impassable.
The pass, situated at an altitude of 15,397 feet, connects Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan with Xinjiang in China. It is a key part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and facilitates significant trade and tourism between the two countries.
Authorities confirmed that the border will reopen in April 2025, depending on weather conditions. During this period, both countries will ensure the safety of cross-border travelers and maintain infrastructure for smooth resumption in spring.
The closure highlights the strategic importance of the Khunjerab Pass and the challenges posed by the region’s harsh winters.
