Islamabad, August 15, 2024 – Pakistan has reported its first suspected case of monkeypox this year, prompting the Ministry of National Health to issue a nationwide high alert. The case involves a young man from Dera, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who recently returned from the Gulf region.
The Ministry has stated that the individual, who is currently exhibiting mild symptoms, has been isolated as a precaution. Samples from the patient have been sent to the National Institute of Health for confirmation. Health authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have begun contact tracing, collecting additional samples from potential contacts of the patient.
In response, the Ministry has directed all provinces to assign dedicated focal persons for monkeypox surveillance and has instructed border health services to implement stringent monitoring measures at all entry points. This proactive approach aims to prevent the spread of the virus and manage any potential outbreaks effectively.
The Punjab Health Department has also issued a high alert. Airports have been directed to ensure the prompt transfer of any suspected cases to hospitals, and district health authorities have been asked to provide up-to-date information on any new suspected cases.
Public and private hospitals across the country have been advised on monkeypox protocols, including monitoring, isolation procedures, and timely laboratory testing. Hospitals are required to report any confirmed cases immediately to the relevant authorities.
This development comes as the World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared monkeypox a global health emergency, highlighting the importance of vigilance and rapid response to contain the virus.
Pakistan has previously reported 11 confirmed cases of monkeypox over the past two years. Health officials are emphasizing the importance of public awareness and adherence to health advisories to prevent further spread of the disease.
