Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication (IT&T) Dr. Umar Saif has revealed Pakistan’s bold plan to significantly enhance connectivity by laying 200,000 kilometers of optical fiber cable. The initiative aims to bolster the country’s digital infrastructure and propel it into the forefront of the global technology landscape.
Dr. Umar Saif commended the exemplary performance of the IT&T ministry over the past four months, attributing much of the success to the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC). He highlighted the council’s pivotal role in securing timely approvals for the ministry’s policies and projects.
In a move set to benefit IT companies, the minister announced a new facility allowing them to retain 50% of their earnings in dollars in their accounts. Additionally, a global standard training program has been initiated for 200,000 IT graduates, providing them with valuable skills and enhancing their employability.
Addressing a long-standing issue for freelancers, Dr. Saif announced the successful resolution of digital payment gateways. Starting February 1, a pilot project will create 10,000 accounts, enabling freelancers to receive payments directly. Furthermore, the establishment of 10,000 employment centers is underway to provide freelancers with convenient facilities under one roof, with the goal of boosting annual IT exports to $10 billion and employing around 100,000 freelancers.
Assuring the resolution of obstacles related to the 5G spectrum, Dr. Umar Saif stated that the directives of the Action Advisory Committee would guide its auction in July-August. He emphasized that the implementation of the Right of Way Policy had successfully resolved disputes between various institutions.
The establishment of the Telecommunication Tribunal, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the telecom sector, was announced by the minister. Dr. Saif also highlighted the launch of the Pakistan Startup Fund amounting to Rs2 billion, aimed at supporting young entrepreneurs, and the initiation of Research and Development Funds to facilitate mobile phone manufacturing companies.
Furthermore, Dr. Saif announced the approval of the Space Policy, opening up the satellite internet market for global companies and positioning Pakistan as a key player in the space and technology sectors.
These sweeping reforms and ambitious initiatives underscore Pakistan’s commitment to becoming a major player in the global digital economy and fostering innovation and growth within its technology sector.
