LAHORE – Pakistan is all set to unveil its first-ever trackless, ticketless, and solar-powered metro system as the Punjab government rolls out the futuristic Automated Rapid Transit (ART) project.
This groundbreaking initiative will replace conventional buses and metro systems with advanced electric vehicles that run on roads without tracks. Each ART vehicle will consist of three coaches, capable of carrying up to 300 passengers. The buses will operate within dedicated lanes, ensuring fast, uninterrupted travel across the city.
The system will feature smart stations equipped with high-speed solar-powered charging, automated fare collection, Wi-Fi, and security surveillance. Commuters will not need physical tickets as the project introduces a fully digital, ticketless fare system for ease and efficiency.
The first phase of the project is set to launch in Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala, with plans to expand the service to 30 cities across Punjab within the next four to five years. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce urban congestion, promote clean energy, and provide affordable public transport to millions.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz stated that the ART system reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable development and public convenience, emphasizing the need for eco-friendly and technologically advanced solutions in Pakistan’s transport sector.
