The acclaimed Pakistani documentary film Songs of the Sufi (SOTS) has garnered the prestigious Best Documentary — Audience Choice Award at the 15th Chicago South Asian Film Festival. This remarkable feature delves into the rich history of classical qawwali, showcasing the talents of the Qawwal Bachay Gharana, along with the perspectives of aficionados, devotees, and music scholars.
Songs of the Sufi weaves together Sufi-inspired art from leading Pakistani artists and Mughal miniature paintings with qawwalis, interviews, and verité-style storytelling. This fusion creates a cinematic musical visual experience that captures the essence of Sufi culture.
Festival Director Jigar Shah praised the film, stating, “Songs of the Sufi is a wonderful craft that explores the history, culture, and universal message of love. I’m very thrilled that the film won at our festival and stood out for masterful direction and emotional depth. Sharukh Waheed and Kamran Anwar have brought this masterpiece to the big screen in a very tasteful and divine way!”
