Islamabad, September 15, 2024 – Pakistan is gearing up to debut its first locally produced four-wheeled electric vehicle (EV) this December, marking a significant milestone in the country’s growing EV industry. The announcement follows a recent meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who emphasized the need to accelerate EV adoption and finalize critical policy frameworks.
Since the introduction of a supportive framework for electric vehicles in 2022, the Pakistani government has issued 49 licenses for the production of two- and three-wheeled EVs, with 25 factories currently operational. The first license for four-wheeled EVs was granted in September 2024, paving the way for local manufacturing of electric cars.
Dewan Farooque Motors Limited (DFML) has already begun production of its electric vehicles at its plant, and the entry of Chinese EV giant BYD into the Pakistani market further underscores the sector’s growth potential. PM Sharif highlighted the urgent need to finalize the EV policy by November, streamline licensing regulations, and develop a comprehensive financial model to support the industry’s expansion.
In addition to the new EV rollout, the government has ambitious plans to distribute electric motorbikes to top-performing students and electrify public transport in Islamabad. These initiatives aim to foster a greener future and promote the adoption of sustainable transportation solutions across the country.
