The Glassworker, Pakistan’s first-ever 2D hand-drawn animated feature, has been officially selected as the country’s submission for the prestigious International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards. Directed by Usman Riaz, the film is a monumental achievement for the nation’s emerging animation industry.
Usman Riaz took to Instagram to share his excitement and gratitude, calling the selection a historic moment for Pakistani cinema. He expressed his deep commitment to the decade-long project, which is currently playing in theatres across the country.
The story of The Glassworker follows a young glassblower as he navigates the complexities of life, love, and loss amidst political upheaval and war. Riaz describes the film as a labor of passion, meant to represent the immense talent and creativity blossoming in Pakistan.
The film has already gained international recognition, having been featured at prominent global festivals such as the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 and the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France in 2022. The screenplay, penned by Moya O’Shea, is brought to life by voice talents like Art Malik, Sacha Dhawan, and Anjli Mohindra.
Produced by Riaz’s Mano Animation Studios in collaboration with global production company Awedacious Originals, The Glassworker promises to be a visual and emotional masterpiece. Local distribution is handled by Mandviwalla Entertainment, the team behind The Legend of Maula Jatt, ensuring nationwide access to this landmark film.
Despite the previous year’s submission, In Flames, not making the Oscars shortlist, there is renewed hope that The Glassworker will position Pakistan as a global contender in animated storytelling.
Riaz has noted that the film offers a unique look into growing up in Pakistan, from cultural depictions of food and clothing to colonial architecture. While deeply rooted in the country’s heritage, its themes are universal, resonating with audiences worldwide.
With this groundbreaking submission, The Glassworker is expected to propel Pakistan’s animation industry onto the global stage, marking a new era for the country’s creative arts.
