KURRAM: A 125-member Pashtun Peace Jirga, consisting of elders and religious scholars from Balochistan and the merged tribal districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has pledged to continue mediation efforts to restore peace in the troubled Kurram district.
On Thursday, the jirga engaged in talks with community elders from both sides in the Sadda and Parachinar areas. Representatives of the conflicting parties also joined the discussions, aimed at resolving tensions and establishing enduring harmony.
According to sources, the jirga members, including notable figures such as Mufti Kifayatullah, Naseer Khan Kokikhel, Amanullah Wazir, and Hamid Sherani, emphasized their independent initiative in addressing the unrest. They reiterated that the jirga was formed to proactively contribute to peacebuilding in violence-hit regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
“We have come here not on anyone’s directive but out of our commitment to quell the unrest and establish peace,” said a jirga representative.
The urgency of their mission was underscored by official statistics revealing that recent violence in Kurram has claimed 133 lives and injured over 200 in incidents including attacks on a passenger vehicle convoy and other acts of violence.
The jirga continues its efforts with hopes of bridging divides and fostering unity in the region.
