Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has expressed confidence that Pakistan will be fully prepared to host the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, despite significant challenges in upgrading the country’s cricket stadiums.
During a media briefing at Gaddafi Stadium on Monday, Naqvi reassured that efforts are underway to complete the necessary upgrades to key stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi before the tournament. The upgrades are focused on bringing these stadiums up to international standards to ensure they are ready for the global event.
“We are working around the clock to upgrade our stadiums. Let the stadiums be built, and teams from all over, including India, will come,” Naqvi stated, emphasizing the ongoing construction efforts.
Naqvi acknowledged the considerable task of upgrading the stadiums, particularly those in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, but expressed hope that the work would be completed in time. He also highlighted the disparity between Pakistan’s stadiums and international standards, emphasizing the need for improvement.
“There is a world of difference between our stadiums and those around the world. None of our stadiums meet international standards; we need to raise the quality of our venues,” Naqvi admitted.
In light of ongoing construction at the National Stadium in Karachi, the PCB has relocated the second Test of the upcoming series against Bangladesh to Rawalpindi, where the first Test will also be held. This decision was made following consultations with security agencies, who recommended holding matches without spectators for safety reasons.
“There is no lack of coordination. The security agencies have advised us to hold matches without spectators, and we have also moved the Test matches after consultation,” Naqvi explained.
Additionally, Naqvi revealed plans to convert a building near Gaddafi Stadium into a hotel to accommodate teams during the Champions Trophy. However, he noted that the project is complex and a decision on its feasibility will be made within the next week or ten days.
The PCB chairman’s remarks reflect the board’s commitment to overcoming challenges and ensuring a successful hosting of the 2025 Champions Trophy, with stadium upgrades being a critical aspect of these preparations.
