The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast dry and partly cloudy weather for most parts of the country on Sunday (today). However, isolated areas in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan are expected to experience rain, wind, and thunderstorms, with snowfall over hills.
According to the PMD’s daily weather update, cold and dry conditions prevailed across most regions in the last 24 hours, with particularly chilly temperatures in hilly areas. The lowest recorded temperatures (°C) were:
- Leh: -11°C
- Astore, Gupis: -03°C
- Hunza: -02°C
- Kalam, Skardu: -01°C
The Met Office has also projected intermittent rain, wind, and thunderstorms with snowfall over mountainous areas from March 9 (today) onward. This is attributed to a shallow westerly wave expected to enter the northern parts of the country by Sunday evening or night. The system is predicted to intensify from March 12 and persist until March 16.
Warnings and Precautions
The PMD has issued warnings regarding heavy rainfall and snowfall, which could lead to road closures and slippery conditions in several regions, including Murree, Galliyat, Naran, Kaghan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, and Haveli between March 10 and March 15.
Additionally, the department has cautioned about potential landslides and avalanches in hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir. Hailstorms are also expected at isolated places in upper KP, upper Punjab, Islamabad, and Kashmir.
Tourists and travelers planning visits to mountainous regions have been advised to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel from March 13 to 16 due to the risk of hazardous weather conditions.
