Body: Today, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) unveiled a rigorous new examination aimed at assessing the clinical aptitude and competencies of medical graduates. Known as the National Residency Examination (NRE) Step 2 Clinical Skills Examination (CSE), this assessment is designed to ensure that candidates meet the stringent standards necessary for medical practice.
The NRE Step 2 CSE is a multifaceted examination that includes practical evaluations covering patient interactions, clinical procedures, and critical decision-making. Candidates must successfully pass both the theoretical and CSE components independently to obtain certification.
Scheduled for a duration of three hours and 30 minutes, the exam will comprise 20 stations across diverse medical disciplines such as medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, and ENT (ear, nose, and throat). Each station will present scenarios where candidates must demonstrate their proficiency and judgment under clinical conditions.
To qualify, candidates must achieve a minimum pass rate of 60% in both the theoretical knowledge and CSE components of the exam.
Professor Dr. Rizwan Taj, President of PMDC, underscored the examination’s significance, particularly for Pakistani nationals graduating from foreign medical schools seeking registration with PMDC. He praised the PMDC’s commitment to enhancing medical and dental education standards, fostering professionalism, and improving patient care nationwide.
The introduction of the NRE Step 2 CSE marks a pivotal advancement in ensuring that medical practitioners in Pakistan uphold the highest standards of clinical proficiency and ethical conduct, reinforcing the nation’s healthcare infrastructure for years to come.
