The Power Division announced a new initiative on Friday, introducing the “Bijli Sahulat” package aimed at reducing electricity costs and promoting energy consumption during the low-demand winter months. The scheme, which will run from December 2024 to February 2025, is designed to encourage domestic, commercial, and industrial consumers to use more electricity during the winter season when demand is generally low.
The announcement follows the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra)’s recent notification of a Rs1.28 per unit reduction in electricity charges, adjusting for September’s fuel price fluctuations. This reduction is seen as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to balance electricity pricing for consumers.
In contrast to the earlier price hike announced in September, which saw an increase of Rs1.743 per unit for three months (September to November), the new package seeks to provide relief. The Power Division’s statement emphasized that the reduced rates will benefit various sectors, providing a financial incentive to increase electricity use during the winter, which traditionally sees a drop in demand.
According to the Power Division’s statement, a flat rate of Rs26.07 per unit will be applied for any additional electricity consumption beyond the historical average benchmark. The package is designed to encourage economic activity, with industries and households alike expected to benefit. Industries and commercial consumers can save up to 37% on their electricity bills based on the amount of additional consumption beyond the benchmark.
The new tariff structure specifies that the reduced rates will only apply to the first 25% of electricity usage above the benchmark. Any consumption beyond this threshold will be billed at the current prevailing rates.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during his address at the Iqbal Day ceremony at the PM House, lauded the government’s efforts to support industrial and commercial growth through reduced electricity costs. He stated that the discounted rates would ensure that businesses and industries run smoothly, boosting economic activity.
“For December, January, and February, those who use additional electricity units will enjoy significant savings,” the Prime Minister said. “There will be reductions of Rs11.42 to Rs26 per unit, with industries seeing savings of Rs5.72 to Rs15 per unit.”
The Prime Minister further noted that the reductions in electricity rates would encourage industries to operate efficiently and foster economic growth. Commercial consumers will also see savings of Rs13.40 to Rs22 per unit, with incremental usage seeing savings of Rs34 to Rs47.
Minister for Power Awais Khan Leghari took to social media to announce the package, calling it an important initiative aimed at reducing electricity costs while stimulating economic growth. He noted that the special discount on excess electricity usage would provide substantial savings for households, industries, and businesses.
The government’s commitment to fostering increased industrial and commercial activity is evident through this initiative, which aims to optimize electricity consumption during the winter months, drive economic growth, and reduce reliance on gas for heating and other energy needs.
