The power sector in Pakistan is grappling with staggering Transmission and Distribution (T&D) losses, which have surged to a massive Rs520.3 billion. Peshawar Electric Power Supply Company (PESCO) registered the highest-ever deficit of Rs153.8 billion in just one financial year. T&D losses are a significant concern in Pakistan’s power sector. The cumulative losses have exceeded the country’s defense spending over the past two years. The target losses for T&D were envisaged at 13.41%, but actual losses reached 17.13% in FY21-22. Various power distribution companies, such as PESCO, IESCO, LESCO, and others, have contributed to the losses. This significant loss emphasizes the need for fundamental reforms in the power sector to curb financial hemorrhaging and ensure efficient electricity distribution.
