President Arif Alvi has granted a significant pardon for female and juvenile prisoners with less than two years remaining in their sentences. The decision, made on Thursday, follows the advice of Prime Minister.
Under this pardon, eligible individuals will be released from incarceration. However, certain categories of offenses are excluded from this measure. Female and juvenile offenders convicted of murder, espionage, anti-state activities, kidnapping, theft, dacoity, adultery, terrorism, narcotics offenses, or those who are foreign citizens will not benefit from this decision.
The approval was granted under Article 45 of the constitution and the rules of business. This article empowers the president to “grant pardon, reprieve and respite, and to remit, suspend or commute any sentence passed by any court, tribunal or other authority.”
This move, just ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8th, reflects a commitment to reform and justice for marginalized members of society. President Alvi’s decision aims to mark Women’s Day with a gesture of compassion and recognition of the rights of women and juveniles in the justice system.
This significant decision is expected to positively impact the lives of numerous individuals, allowing them a fresh start and an opportunity to reintegrate into society.
