New Southport, England — Violent clashes erupted in the southeastern coastal town of New Southport near Liverpool on Monday, following a tragic knife attack at a local school that resulted in the deaths of three students.
The violence began after several white extremist groups organized a protest, falsely claiming that the attack was carried out by a Syrian refugee. Despite no evidence supporting this claim, the demonstrators gathered outside a local mosque, where they engaged in acts of vandalism, set a police van on fire, and pelted both the mosque and police officers with rocks.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer addressed the situation, noting that while the protest initially aimed to honor the memory of the victims, it was quickly “hijacked by extremists,” leading to the escalation of violence. Starmer condemned the rioters, stating that those who disrupt public order will be “dealt with firmly” and underscoring that such actions will not be tolerated under the guise of protest.
Specialized police units were deployed to manage the situation, and several people were reported injured in the ensuing clashes. Authorities are working to restore calm and have promised a thorough investigation into both the school attack and the subsequent violence.
The unrest was ignited by a knife attack that occurred two days prior at the New Southport school, resulting in ten injuries and the deaths of three female students. A false social media post falsely identifying the attacker as a Syrian refugee fueled outrage and mobilized the extremist groups responsible for the protest.
Local leaders are calling for unity and urging the community to reject violence. They emphasize the need for a collective effort to address the issues at hand and to avoid further escalation.
