Islamabad, Pakistan – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has officially granted a license to Starlink, the satellite internet service provided by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, marking a significant step towards improving broadband connectivity across Pakistan.
The announcement came on Wednesday during a press briefing where PTA officials confirmed that Starlink has met all regulatory requirements and will now be able to operate in the country. The move is expected to bring faster, more reliable internet services, particularly to rural and underserved areas where traditional broadband infrastructure has long been lacking.
In his statement, PTA Chairman Amir Azeem Bajwa highlighted the importance of satellite-based internet services in bridging the digital divide. “Starlink’s entry into the Pakistani market represents a major leap forward in providing high-speed internet access to our people, especially in remote and difficult-to-reach areas. This will have a significant impact on education, healthcare, and e-commerce, all of which are essential for the growth of Pakistan’s economy.”
Starlink uses low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide internet access, offering download speeds of up to 200 Mbps with low latency, even in rural regions that struggle with traditional fiber or cable infrastructure. The service is expected to complement existing telecom providers and enhance Pakistan’s digital landscape.
While Starlink’s presence will open up new possibilities for internet access, experts believe that the service could also face regulatory challenges and competition from local telecom giants. The PTA has assured that it will closely monitor the operations to ensure compliance with Pakistan’s laws and regulations.
“With the increasing demand for high-speed internet services across Pakistan, it is essential to bring in technologies that can cater to the needs of all citizens,” said Asim Murtaza, a telecom analyst. “This partnership with Starlink will not only improve access but could also lead to more affordable internet packages in the long run.”
Starlink’s licensing in Pakistan is part of a broader push by the government to expand the country’s digital infrastructure, with plans for 5G deployment and other initiatives aimed at boosting connectivity.
For now, Starlink users can expect the service to gradually roll out in the coming months, with an initial focus on regions with limited access to conventional internet services.
With this new development, Pakistan is poised to take a step into the future of global connectivity, making high-speed satellite internet a reality for millions of its citizens.
