In a strategic move aimed at securing reserved seats and bolstering legislative influence, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) announced its decision on Monday to ally with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). Under this alliance, PTI candidates will join the religio-political party in both the national and provincial assemblies.
Gohar Khan, a prominent PTI leader, revealed the decision during a press conference alongside Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Chairman Allama Raja Nasir and SIC Chairman Mohammad Hamid Raza. Khan emphasized the necessity of securing reserved seats to effectively participate in governance and legislative processes.
The decision comes in response to recent notifications from the Election Commission of Pakistan, which outlined the procedures for candidates who emerged victorious in the elections. To consolidate power and navigate legislative challenges, it became imperative for PTI-backed candidates to align with a political entity.
“Our candidates have submitted their affidavits, and with their consent, we announce that PTI-backed independent candidates will join the Sunni Ittehad Council in the assembly,” stated Gohar Khan, underscoring the collaborative nature of the alliance.
Defending the move, Khan highlighted that reserved seats are allocated to political parties as per electoral regulations. With 70 reserved seats in the National Assembly and a total of 210 across the country, securing representation is pivotal for effective governance.
Furthermore, Khan revealed that PTI has formalized its alliance with the SIC through a signed agreement, which will be submitted to the Election Commission of Pakistan. This agreement solidifies the partnership between the two parties, indicating a concerted effort to strengthen their political foothold.
The alliance between PTI and SIC not only underscores the importance of coalition-building in Pakistani politics but also reflects the pragmatic approach adopted by political parties to navigate the intricacies of the legislative landscape. As both parties prepare to collaborate within the assembly, their alliance is poised to shape the trajectory of governance and policymaking in the country.
