In a strongly-worded statement on Monday, a spokesperson for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) vehemently condemned what they deemed an “unconstitutional and illegal act” by the caretaker government, accusing them of orchestrating a countrywide blackout of social media to hinder PTI’s fundraising efforts during a telethon.
The PTI spokesperson asserted that the caretaker government’s actions were a blatant violation of the basic constitutional rights of the country’s over 240 million citizens. The blackout, occurring during PTI’s Fund Raising Telethon, was perceived as an attempt to obstruct the party from effectively communicating its message and raising funds.
Expressing concern over the potential negative impact on the already fragile economy, the spokesperson emphasized that such tactics had proven unsuccessful in the past and were unlikely to succeed in preventing PTI from reaching the masses.
The spokesperson highlighted the broader pattern of hindrances faced by PTI, stating that the party had been consistently impeded from conducting peaceful political and electoral activities. Describing the internet shutdown as a form of coercion, fascism, and misuse of power, the spokesperson urged the Supreme Court to promptly take notice of the illegal act and hold those responsible accountable.
Despite the disruptions, the PTI spokesperson noted that citizens had generously donated significant amounts to the party during the telethon, attributing this to the honesty and trustworthiness of PTI Founding Chairman Imran Khan. Allegations were made that efforts were underway, utilizing state resources, to manipulate election outcomes and transform a clear defeat into a victory through conspiracy and state power.
The spokesperson urged the apex court to investigate and penalize those responsible for the economic damage caused by the internet shutdown. Emphasizing the significance of February 8 as a day of victory for constitution, democracy, and people’s right to vote, the PTI spokesperson warned that any attempts to undermine the people’s mandate through coercion were destined to fail.
