A decorated Green Beret who died by suicide in an explosive incident outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), investigators revealed on Friday.
Matthew Livelsberger, 37, a highly decorated member of the US Special Forces, took his life on New Year’s Day in a rented Tesla Cybertruck packed with fuel containers and fireworks. The vehicle exploded in the hotel’s valet area, injuring seven people nearby.
“This tragic incident, while unusually public and sensational, appears to be a case of suicide involving a decorated combat veteran grappling with PTSD and other personal struggles,” FBI Special Agent Spencer Evans stated at a press conference.
Investigators discovered two letters on Livelsberger’s phone, in which he expressed guilt over taking lives during his service and discussed other burdens weighing on him. While further analysis of his devices is ongoing, officials have not uncovered any links between Livelsberger and terrorist organizations.
“We are also looking into potential family issues or personal grievances that could have played a role,” Evans added.
The blast shattered windows and caused chaos at the glass-fronted Trump International Hotel, but officials have emphasized that this appears to be a personal tragedy rather than an act of terrorism.
The incident highlights the ongoing mental health challenges faced by veterans, particularly those who have seen combat, and raises questions about the support systems available to them after their service.
