The Punjab government has announced strict action and heavy fines against public and private schools that open before 8:45 AM, as part of new measures to tackle smog and changing weather conditions across the province.
According to an official notification issued by the Punjab School Education Department, all educational institutions — including government and private schools — are required to strictly follow the revised timings. Schools found violating the new schedule will face significant monetary penalties and potential administrative action.
The decision follows growing health concerns due to severe smog in major cities such as Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala, where air quality has reached hazardous levels. Authorities say the later opening time will help reduce early-morning exposure to polluted air and cold temperatures for children.
A spokesperson for the Education Department stated, “This step prioritizes students’ health and safety. Any institution found disregarding the directive will face immediate fines and inspection.”
Parents and teachers have largely welcomed the move, noting that the change could improve children’s well-being and attendance during the smog season.
The new schedule will remain in effect until further notice, depending on improvements in weather and air quality conditions.
