Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has entered into a strategic partnership with Huawei Technologies to develop Lahore into Pakistan’s first modern smart city. During her visit to Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, the CM outlined ambitious plans for the digital transformation of Punjab, focusing on ICT infrastructure, e-commerce, and the digitization of health and education sectors.
Highlighting the role of technology in driving growth, CM Maryam Nawaz invited Huawei to invest in Punjab, offering opportunities to set up an office in Nawaz Sharif IT City, after-sales service centers, and an assembly plant. Huawei will also assist in capacity building, IT research, and the establishment of Punjab’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) university. The collaboration is part of the broader vision of “Digital Punjab,” aimed at modernizing the region’s digital landscape.
The partnership will see Huawei’s expertise play a critical role in the implementation of telecommunication and digitization projects, with the company’s Safe City initiative in Lahore becoming a cornerstone of the transformation. Additionally, Huawei’s ecosystem development initiatives will be pivotal in advancing the city’s smart city status, enhancing connectivity, security, and providing opportunities for youth through cutting-edge digital technologies.
During her visit, CM Maryam Nawaz also explored new avenues of cooperation with BGI Genomics in Shanghai. The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration in cancer treatment and genetic research. This includes the establishment of laboratories for genetic tests and the creation of a health sector working group. BGI Genomics committed to supporting Punjab’s initiatives in genetic research and agricultural innovation, furthering the province’s development in these crucial fields.
This partnership marks a significant milestone in Punjab’s journey toward becoming a digitally advanced and technologically driven region.
