The caretaker Punjab government, under the leadership of interim Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, has approved a substantial 16 per cent increase in driving licence fees. The decision, finalized during a cabinet meeting in Lahore, will come into effect from January 1, 2024.
Starting from the new year, the fee for obtaining a learner’s driving licence will see a significant surge from Rs60 to Rs1,000. This considerable rise aims to streamline the licensing process and potentially contribute to enhancing road safety measures in the region.
Interim Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi defended the decision, stating that the increased fees would be utilized to improve and modernize the infrastructure related to driving tests and license issuance. The move is part of the government’s broader efforts to ensure a more efficient and secure driving licensing system.
In a noteworthy development, the cabinet has also introduced a special provision for citizens living abroad. Individuals residing in countries such as America, Canada, and others will now have the option to obtain a driving licence from Punjab by paying a fixed fee of $100. This step is seen as an initiative to facilitate overseas Pakistanis and streamline the process for those residing outside the country.
While the decision has been met with mixed reactions from the public, with some expressing concerns about the substantial increase, supporters believe that the enhanced fees will contribute to a safer and more organized road environment.
The Punjab government has assured citizens that the additional revenue generated from the increased driving licence fees will be invested in improving the overall traffic management system, road infrastructure, and promoting road safety initiatives. The authorities are confident that these measures will lead to a more efficient and secure driving experience for the residents of Punjab.
