Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized the government’s top priority is protecting citizens’ lives and property, warning that any negligence in this regard will not be tolerated. In a significant move towards enhancing transparency and professionalism in law enforcement, the Punjab government has implemented a ban on social media use among police officials and has introduced body cameras for officers.
The Punjab Home Department issued the orders, aiming to ensure real-time monitoring of police activities during operations, investigations, and traffic duties. Police officers in various wings, including operations, investigations, and traffic management, will be equipped with bodycams. This initiative is part of broader efforts to promote professionalism, accountability, and transparency in law enforcement, according to government sources.
“These steps are vital to upholding transparency, improving professionalism, and ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights,” said Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The government hopes that the introduction of bodycams will lead to improved behavior and greater accountability among officers, while also deterring any misconduct during interactions with the public.
In addition to the bodycam initiative, the government has imposed strict restrictions on the use of social media by police officers while on duty. Platforms such as TikTok and Facebook have been banned during work hours to ensure that officers focus entirely on their responsibilities. According to a government spokesperson, the directive follows concerns that some officers were spending too much time on social media, particularly making TikTok videos, instead of performing their official duties.
The Chief Minister’s office directed the Punjab inspector general of police (IGP) to enforce the ban. A notification revealed that a large number of Punjab Police officers, including women officials, were increasingly active on social media, with some videos going viral. The new policy prohibits the uploading of videos in police uniforms without prior approval from the district police officer (DPO).
Violators of the new policy will face strict departmental action. This comprehensive approach reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to improving the standards of law enforcement and safeguarding the public’s trust.
