LAHORE:
The Punjab government has announced a ban on the use of loudspeakers in mosques across the province, restricting their use only for the call to prayer (Azaan).
According to the official notification, the decision was taken under the Punjab Sound Systems (Regulation) Act, in an effort to control noise pollution and maintain public order.
Under the new rules, using loudspeakers for sermons, speeches, or other announcements will now be considered a violation and may lead to fines and imprisonment.
“This measure is not against any religious practice but is meant to ensure peace and discipline in residential and commercial areas,” said a spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department.
The administration has directed district police officers to ensure strict compliance, with special monitoring teams being formed at the local level.
Religious scholars have been urged to cooperate with the authorities and help implement the decision in the spirit of mutual respect and lawfulness.
