In a decisive move to address the worsening air quality in Lahore, the Punjab government has announced the closure of all primary schools for one week due to a severe smog crisis. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed that schools for classes 1 to 5, both public and private, will remain closed, emphasizing the Chief Minister’s zero-tolerance policy towards smog.
During a press conference, Aurangzeb attributed the alarming air quality to polluted air blowing in from India, primarily caused by the burning of crop residue. She revealed that Lahore’s air quality index (AQI) soared beyond 1000, hitting levels as high as 1900 near the border on the previous day. The minister noted that strong winds from Chandigarh carried pollutants into Lahore, exacerbating the smog situation.
Aurangzeb explained the fluctuating AQI levels, stating that while the AQI dropped to between 180 and 200 after the winds subsided, the return of strong winds from India this morning caused the AQI to spike again, reaching 1017. She warned that the current AQI levels pose serious health risks and criticized those politicizing the issue.
In response to the crisis, Aurangzeb emphasized the importance of local-level surveillance and community efforts. She urged farmers to avoid burning crop residue and encouraged the use of super seeders, which are available for rent. Recent arrests of farmers for this practice highlight the government’s commitment to tackling the smog issue through individual responsibility.
Addressing the need for regional cooperation, Aurangzeb stated that resolving the smog problem necessitates collaboration with India. She mentioned the success of a green lockdown in the Shimla Hills, which effectively lowered AQI levels by restricting three-wheeled vehicles. Furthermore, she warned of strict action against vehicles emitting excessive smoke, leveraging Safe City cameras for monitoring.
Looking ahead, Aurangzeb predicted that winds would continue to carry pollutants toward Lahore for the coming week, though she expressed hope for a reduction in wind speed. She reiterated earlier advisories urging citizens to limit outdoor activities, underscoring the unhealthy air quality in Lahore.
As a result of these circumstances, the decision to close primary schools from playgroup to class 5 for a week will be officially communicated to both public and private institutions. This decision follows an adjustment in school timings to 8:45 am announced on October 22nd, demonstrating the government’s proactive approach to safeguarding the health of children amid the smog crisis.
