In a significant move to support the agricultural sector, the Punjab government has announced the launch of the “Kissan Card” scheme, set to begin on September 1, 2024. The initiative aims to streamline the purchasing process for farmers by allowing them to use these cards at Bank of Punjab branches to buy essential agricultural inputs, including fertilizers, seeds, and pesticides/insecticides.
The registration process for this scheme is currently underway, with the Secretary of Agriculture for Punjab, Iftikhar Ali Sahoo, setting a target of enrolling one million farmers by August 31, 2024. As of now, over 600,000 farmers have already been successfully registered.
To assist farmers in utilizing the new Kissan Cards effectively, information desks will be established at Bank of Punjab branches. These desks will provide guidance on the card’s use and help address any queries.
In addition to this, Secretary Sahoo has urged the relevant authorities to accelerate the registration of dealers who will accept the Kissan Cards for agricultural inputs. This move is expected to ensure a smooth transition and wider acceptance of the cards across the agricultural community.
A high-level meeting to review the progress of the Kissan Card scheme was recently held, attended by representatives from the Bank of Punjab and senior officers from the Agriculture Department. The meeting underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing support for farmers and improving agricultural practices in the region.
