Lahore, September 13, 2023 – Punjab Inspector General Police (IGP) Dr. Usman Anwar provided an update on the investigation into the disappearance of anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan during a hearing at the Lahore High Court (LHC) today. The IGP informed Chief Justice Muhammad Ameer Bhatti that the case was moving in a “good direction.”
Imran Riaz Khan, a prominent journalist, had gone missing on May 11, 2023, after his arrest at Sialkot Airport. His father had filed a plea with the Lahore High Court seeking his son’s recovery, as Khan’s whereabouts remained undisclosed.
During today’s hearing, Chief Justice Bhatti inquired about the progress in the missing anchorperson’s case. IGP Dr. Anwar stated that he had met with the petitioner and his counsel, as directed by the LHC, and had updated them on the ongoing developments in the case. He further assured the court that the investigation was on the right track.
However, Ali Mian Ashfaq, the petitioner’s counsel, emphasized that developments in the case could occur at any time. In light of this, the high court judge adjourned the proceedings until September 20, 2023.
This latest extension comes after Chief Justice Bhatti had previously given the Punjab IGP until September 13 to recover Imran Riaz Khan. During the earlier hearing, IGP Dr. Anwar had expressed optimism, promising “good news” within 10 to 15 days and requesting additional time to produce Khan.
The court had initially set deadlines of May 22 and May 30 for Khan’s recovery, which were extended due to ongoing investigative efforts. All law enforcement and intelligence agencies have been directed by the court to collaborate to ensure Khan’s safe return.
Imran Riaz Khan, known for his vocal support of ousted Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan and his policies, was arrested on May 11, 2023, reportedly in connection with the May 9 riots. His disappearance has sparked concern and demands for a swift resolution from various quarters.
