Lahore, October 30, 2025 — In a landmark move aimed at promoting clean energy and sustainable transportation, the Punjab government has announced that no new petrol pump will be allowed to operate without an electric vehicle (EV) charging station.
The policy, the first of its kind in the province, is designed to encourage EV adoption and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Officials said the initiative aligns with Pakistan’s broader goal of transitioning toward green energy and lower carbon emissions.
According to the Punjab Energy Department, the new regulation will apply to all future petrol pump licenses, making it mandatory for applicants to install EV charging infrastructure alongside traditional fuel dispensers.
“This step marks a major shift in Punjab’s energy and transport strategy,” a department spokesperson said. “It ensures that as vehicle technology evolves, our infrastructure evolves with it.”
Experts have welcomed the move, calling it a forward-thinking policy that will not only promote cleaner transport options but also attract investment in Pakistan’s growing EV sector.
The government has also hinted at incentives for private investors and oil marketing companies willing to set up EV chargers across the province.
