LAHORE: In a major development for urban transportation, the Punjab government has announced plans to launch Lahore’s first fully underground metro train service, the Blue Line Metro Train. The project, aimed at easing traffic congestion and modernizing the city’s public transport system, is expected to be completed within three years.
The 27-kilometer Blue Line will connect Valencia Town in the south to Babu Sabu Chowk in the northeast, covering key areas such as Johar Town, Faisal Town, Kalma Chowk, Gulberg, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, and Allama Iqbal Town. The Punjab Transport Department has initiated feasibility studies and design planning for the mega project.
With an estimated budget of Rs 600 billion, the underground metro is expected to accommodate over 250,000 passengers daily, providing a fast, eco-friendly, and affordable transport solution for the residents of Lahore. The initiative follows the success of the Orange Line Metro Train, Pakistan’s first metro train, which began operations in 2020.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has emphasized that the project will boost economic activity, reduce pollution, and improve connectivity in the provincial capital. The Blue Line marks a historic milestone in Punjab’s public transport infrastructure and is expected to significantly enhance the city’s urban mobility.
