KARACHI, June 27, 2024 — Karachi, amidst scorching temperatures hitting 42°C, is set to receive a much-needed respite as rains are forecasted by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) starting today.
The city, enduring a heatwave with “feels-like” temperatures soaring above 50°C, has seen a surge in heatstroke cases, prompting heightened medical attention across hospitals. Factors such as rapid urbanization and diminishing green spaces have exacerbated Karachi’s climate challenges.
The PMD anticipates rain showers in Karachi’s outskirts and other adjacent areas later today. The weather agency predicts a hot and humid day ahead, with temperatures ranging between 36°C to 38°C. Humidity levels currently stand at 73%, with the lowest temperature recorded at 31°C.
Private weather stations also foresee light to moderate rain across Karachi and several cities in Sindh including Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Naushero Feroz, and Dadu. Additionally, Tharparkar, Umarkot, and Mithi brace for rainy spells until Friday.
Previously, Karachi experienced a dust storm, and the PMD has issued warnings for isolated heavy rainfall in various parts of Sindh province until July 1. Moist air currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are anticipated to continue influencing southern and eastern regions, with thundershowers and gusty winds expected in parts of Sindh.
As Karachi anticipates rainfall, residents hope for relief from the blistering heatwave, with authorities urging precautionary measures to mitigate heat-related risks.
