Karachi, June 27, 2024 — The anticipated rain in Karachi today brought a mix of relief and challenges as the city grappled with its aftermath. However, the initial downpour led to widespread power outages, affecting 240 feeders across various neighborhoods.
In a separate incident, a billboard collapsed onto a building in DHA’s Shahdaman Town, North Karachi, due to the heavy rainfall.
While the temperature dropped significantly, offering respite from scorching heat that soared to 38 degrees Celsius earlier today, the rain also caused disruptions in the city’s traffic. A passenger bus lost control on Hasan Square, colliding with the sidewalk and obstructing traffic on one lane. The incident involved a bus from a private community, significantly impacting the road leading from Gharibabad to Stadium Road.
The Meteorological Office had previously forecasted thunderstorms and lightning for Karachi on Thursday and Friday, underscoring the volatile weather conditions gripping the city.
Despite the temporary relief from the heat, Karachi remains humid, with a heatstroke warning issued by the Met Office due to a humidity level of 49 percent. The forecast predicts temperatures may reach up to 40 degrees Celsius, with a heat index peaking at 48 degrees Celsius, emphasizing the continued risk of heat-related illnesses.
The contrasting weather conditions — intermittent rain versus prevailing heatwave — highlight the need for vigilance and precautionary measures among Karachi’s residents.
