RAWALPINDI, 1 Dec 2025 — The city of Rawalpindi is gearing up for a major infrastructure upgrade as authorities prepare to launch a Rs. 8 billion underpass project starting January 2026. The initiative aims to ease chronic traffic congestion on one of the city’s busiest and most important routes — Peshawar Road.
According to officials, the project includes the construction of three modern underpasses at key traffic choke points:
-
Race Course Park Square
-
Army Graveyard Square
-
Chairing Cross
These underpasses will form a crucial part of a larger vision to create a signal-free corridor from Ammar Chowk to Motorway Chowk, significantly reducing travel time for thousands of commuters.
Authorities confirm that initial preparations such as surveys, design approvals, and relocation of utility lines have already been completed. Work orders are set to be issued in December, enabling construction to begin right after the New Year.
A Major Relief for Daily Commuters
Peshawar Road is used by over 250,000 vehicles daily, making it one of the most congested stretches in Rawalpindi. Long traffic jams, delays, and bottlenecks have been persistent issues for years.
Once completed, the new underpasses are expected to:
-
Remove multiple traffic signals
-
Allow uninterrupted flow of vehicles
-
Reduce congestion during peak hours
-
Improve overall connectivity between major intersections and the motorway
Better Urban Planning Ahead
City planners say this project is part of a broader development plan focusing on modern, signal-free roads and improved transportation infrastructure. Rawalpindi has already seen several flyovers and underpasses built in recent years, but officials believe this new project will be among the most impactful.
Traffic police will soon announce diversion plans to manage vehicle flow during construction, ensuring that disruption remains minimal for the public.
The Rs. 8 billion investment signals the government’s strong push for enhanced mobility and better urban planning — a move widely welcomed by residents hoping for smoother and faster travel within the city.
