In a significant turn of events, protests in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) have led to the approval of a substantial relief package following negotiations between the government and representatives of the protesters.
Shaukat Nawaz Mir, the head of the alliance leading the protests, expressed gratitude, stating, “Thank God, our one-year effort for people’s rights have borne fruits. We have been given a big package,” as he announced the cessation of protests.
The breakthrough came after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sanctioned a grant of Rs23 billion to address key demands, including subsidies on flour and electricity prices. This decision was accompanied by detailed announcements from AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, outlining the specifics of the relief package.
As per the announced measures, the price of flour has been reduced significantly, with a 40kg bag witnessing a reduction of Rs1,100 and 20kg being priced at Rs1000. Moreover, electricity tariffs have been revised, offering relief to domestic and commercial consumers.
However, despite these concessions, tensions escalated in Muzaffarabad, resulting in clashes between paramilitary troops and protesters. Tragically, three individuals lost their lives, with several others sustaining injuries. The unrest persisted despite the government’s attempts to placate the situation through financial support and dialogue.
The continuation of protests underscores the persistent grievances of the people, despite the relief package. Reports indicate that normalcy remains elusive, with sporadic violence disrupting daily life. Incidents of stone-throwing and vehicle arson further exacerbate the situation, highlighting the deep-seated frustrations within the populace.
Meanwhile, individuals affected by the unrest voiced their anguish, citing the indiscriminate use of force and the resultant hardships faced by innocent civilians. The lack of access to essential services, including medical care, compounds the suffering of the affected communities.
