Rescue and relief efforts are in full swing across Pakistan as heavy rain and snowfall have caused widespread devastation in several regions, including Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).

Balochistan, KP, and GB Affected

In the wake of the inclement weather, the toll on the country has been severe. In KP alone, at least 40 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents, while hundreds have been displaced due to floods in Balochistan. The situation in GB has seen major roads blocked due to landslides, disrupting travel and access.

Prime Minister’s Visit to Gwadar

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif visited Gwadar, a city hit hard by torrential rains and floods, and announced a comprehensive compensation package for those affected. He pledged Rs0.75 million for completely destroyed homes and Rs0.3 million for partially damaged houses. Additionally, Rs2 million compensation was announced for families who lost loved ones, with Rs0.5 million for the injured.

Relief Efforts and Assistance

Provincial authorities have remained on high alert, deploying aid to all affected areas. The Prime Minister assured that the compensation and relief efforts, including the distribution of 7,000 ration bags, will be coordinated with national and provincial disaster management authorities.

KP Situation

In KP, the death toll has reached 40, with 62 reported injuries and significant property damage. Relief items such as tents, food, and blankets have been provided to affected families in 14 districts, particularly in Bajaur, Mohmand, and Dir districts.

GB Faces Fuel Shortage

GB has faced transportation disruptions and a severe fuel shortage due to the closure of the Karakoram Highway. This closure has led to a 20 to 25% increase in vegetable and fruit prices in the region, affecting daily life.

Weather Forecast

The Pakistan Meteorological Department predicts a westerly wave entering Balochistan, likely to affect 16 districts, including Khuzdar, Nokundi, Turbat, and Gwadar. Light snowfall is expected in mountainous areas such as Chaman, Pasni, Quetta, and Ziarat.

Continued Support and Preparedness

Authorities are urging caution as more rains and snowfall are forecasted. The government remains committed to providing support and assistance to those affected by the ongoing severe weather conditions.
