A Russian airport located in the city of Pskov faced an attack by three Ukrainian drones. The country’s defense ministry confirmed the assault, revealing that the incident took place on Wednesday. Fortunately, there were no casualties resulting from the attack.
Mikhail Vedernikov, the regional governor, posted on social media, stating that the defense ministry was successfully repelling the drone attack at Pskov’s airport. He promptly arrived at the scene of the incident and provided preliminary information indicating no casualties. The extent of the damage caused by the attack is currently being assessed.
The Ukrainian government’s attempt to carry out a terrorist attack using aircraft-type UAVs on Russian targets was thwarted, as reported by the Russian Defense Ministry to RIA Novosti. The ministry further stated that the air defense forces on duty managed to shoot down three Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles over the Bryansk region’s territory and another UAV over the Oryol region’s territory.
Emergency services confirmed that four Il-76 transport planes sustained damage on the ground due to the attack. In response to the incident, Russian authorities made the decision to close the airspace in the region for safety reasons.
According to reports from the Russian outlet Readovka, around 15 Ukrainian drones targeted the airport in Pskov. These drones were subsequently intercepted and shot down, including through the use of small arms fire.
Situated approximately 700 kilometers north of Ukraine, Pskov is located about 30 kilometers away from the border of NATO member Estonia. The city is also positioned around 60 kilometers southwest of Latvia. Air traffic services informed TASS that airspace above Moscow’s Vnukovo airport had been temporarily closed. However, it was later reported that Vnukovo airport has resumed its operations, and the airspace has been reopened.
This incident follows a series of recent drone attacks that Moscow and other Russian regions have been facing in the past few weeks. These attacks have intensified after Kyiv pledged to “return” the conflict to Russia during the summer months. Notably, the region of Pskov had been targeted by drone attacks in late May as well. The ongoing tensions between the two nations continue to contribute to the volatility in the region.
Authorities on both sides are monitoring the situation closely as geopolitical tensions remain high.
