Saudi Arabia Airlines has inked a deal with German aircraft manufacturer Lilium to acquire 100 state-of-the-art electric air taxis. The visionary initiative is set to reshape the kingdom’s transportation landscape, offering a swift and eco-friendly alternative for commuters.
The newly procured small aircraft, characterized by their electric propulsion, are part of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. CEO Ibrahim Koshy emphasized that these air taxis, designed to carry four to six passengers, will deliver a premium and efficient service.
One remarkable feature of these air taxis is their ability to take off and land without the need for traditional runways. With a range of up to 200 kilometers on a single charge, they present an ideal solution for short-haul domestic flights. The electric nature of the aircraft aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable aviation.
Koshy also pointed out that the air taxis could play a crucial role in the transportation of pilgrims, offering a seamless travel experience for those arriving in the kingdom. Pilgrims could potentially board an air taxi directly from the airport, simplifying their journey to Makkah.
However, the introduction of these futuristic air taxis may face some delays, as licensing and infrastructure development are still in progress. The anticipated launch date could be pushed as far ahead as 2025. The deployment of charging ports and designated passenger drop-off areas is essential for the successful integration of this innovative transportation mode.
