In a groundbreaking move, Saudi Arabia has unveiled the trial of a driverless air taxi aimed at revolutionizing transportation for Haj pilgrims during the holy season. According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), this marks the world’s first air taxi to be licensed by a civil aviation authority.
Designed to ferry pilgrims between sacred sites, the autonomous air taxis will not only streamline travel but also serve as a vital tool for emergency transportation and the swift delivery of medical supplies. The trial, inaugurated by Saleh Al Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics Services, is a significant step towards modernizing pilgrimage logistics.
Originally announced in January, the project is spearheaded by Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia), which intends to operate these innovative aircraft. The air taxis will shuttle 4-6 passengers at a time, bridging the gap between King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and hotels in Makkah with unprecedented efficiency.
This pioneering initiative underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge technology to enhance the Haj experience and ensure the safety and comfort of pilgrims. With the successful implementation of the trial, the kingdom aims to set new standards in air transportation for religious gatherings worldwide.
