For nearly a century, Saudi Arabia has maintained a steadfast commitment to preserving and providing the sacred Zamzam water, an enduring legacy that dates back to the visionary efforts of King Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al-Saud in 1926.
Inaugurating the conservation of water, King Abdulaziz commissioned the construction of a Sabeel, a public drinking fountain, in 1926. The following year, a second fountain was built under his orders, focusing on the repair and protection of the revered Zamzam well.
Throughout the years, Saudi monarchs have taken decisive steps to safeguard this precious water source. King Faisal bin Abdulaziz, during his reign, instructed the construction of a second basement for the well in 1973, aimed at facilitating pilgrims’ access to Zamzam water.
Under King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz’s rule, the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Zamzam Water Project was launched, introducing a state-of-the-art purification station, bottling facility, and transportation system. This project not only ensured the purity and standard of the holy water but also improved access for pilgrims.
Continuing this legacy, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 2017 approved the rehabilitation of wells through disinfection, debris removal, and environmental protection measures. Five special service passages were established to safeguard the integrity of the water.
Today, the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque make this holy water available to pilgrims, thanks to two pumps extracting water at a rate of 360 cubic meters per hour. The water is then delivered to the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Zamzam Water Project for reservation, cleaning, and distribution to necessary locations.
A sophisticated network of stainless steel pipes, air chambers, cleaning rooms, and control systems spans four kilometers, ensuring the efficient transportation of Zamzam water.
Zamzam water holds profound significance for Muslims worldwide, symbolizing purity and blessings. Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving this sacred resource stands as a testament to its enduring legacy and dedication to serving pilgrims on their spiritual journey.
