ISLAMABAD: Public and private educational institutions in Rawalpindi and Islamabad will remain closed today (Monday) due to widespread road closures caused by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) ongoing protest.
The district administrations of the twin cities announced the closure to avoid disruptions for students and staff during the unrest.
In Rawalpindi, the deputy commissioner clarified that essential offices, including the district administration, Civil Defence, Rescue 1122, and hospitals, will remain operational.
The Punjab Mass Transit Authority has also suspended the Metro Bus Service between Rawalpindi and Islamabad for the day. Additionally, the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) confirmed the Metro Bus Service will remain non-operational between Saddar and Faizabad stations from November 28 to December 1, 2024, for maintenance on the metro corridor’s Rawalpindi section.
Commercial activities in the cantonment areas, however, will continue as usual, according to Cantonment Traders Association General Secretary Zafar Qadri, since the closure does not extend to bazaars.
The Punjab government has also cancelled leaves for doctors and paramedical staff in Rawalpindi’s three government-run hospitals – Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Holy Family Hospital, and District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital – which have been instructed to function as per routine.
The situation highlights the impact of the ongoing political unrest on the daily lives of citizens in the twin cities.
