KARACHI: The Karachi Central District has come under strict security measures with the imposition of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code for two days. The move, ordered by the Karachi Commissioner on Monday after a request from the Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Police Karachi, aims to maintain law and order amid potential threats.
The restrictions include a ban on pillion riding and gatherings of more than four people, with rallies and demonstrations explicitly prohibited. Station House Officers (SHOs) have been empowered to enforce the order, with law enforcement directed to take action against violators.
Despite these measures, members of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) gathered at ‘Mukka Chowk’ to observe Martyrs’ Day, leading to tensions in the area. Police intervened and detained at least 15 individuals for violating the imposed restrictions, according to police sources.
The MQM-London spokesperson, Mustafa Azizabadi, alleged that a crackdown on MQM workers was underway, with several prominent members, including Nisar Panhwar, Aftab Baqai, Anwar Khan Tarin, Altaf Mengal, and Dr. Bilal, taken into custody. He further claimed that additional arrests were imminent as workers attempted to visit the Martyrs’ Monument to offer prayers.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to strictly enforce Section 144 to prevent any further escalation of unrest.
