Islamabad, January 5, 2024: In a significant move, the Senate of Pakistan has passed a resolution calling for the postponement of upcoming elections, citing serious concerns over security threats and extreme weather conditions in colder regions, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Senator Dilawar expressed apprehension over the challenges faced by political parties in ensuring effective participation in these areas during the electoral process.

Highlighting recent attempts on the lives of prominent political figures, including JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman and former lawmaker Mohsin Dawar, Dilawar conveyed “great concern” about the increasing security threats to politicians, exacerbating the challenges faced by political parties in ensuring a free and fair election.
The senator pointed to alerts issued by intelligence agencies, indicating imminent threats of militant attacks on election rallies, especially in KP and Balochistan. Considering the resurgence of COVID-19, he emphasized the need to address legitimate concerns, facilitate sufficient opportunities for election campaigns, and guarantee the safety of politicians and citizens.
“The Senate of Pakistan hereby resolves that conducting elections without addressing legitimate concerns would amount to a violation of fundamental rights,” Dilawar asserted.
He called for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to promptly implement the postponement, ensuring necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of elections with revised dates. The process of filing nomination papers and scrutiny would continue within the extended timelines.
Opposition Raises Concerns:
However, not everyone in the Senate supported the resolution. PML-N Senator Afnanullah questioned the timing of such concerns, citing worse conditions in 2008 and 2013 when elections were held. He accused some of seeking personal benefits by advocating for a delay.
Independent Senator Hidayatullah Khan, on the other hand, highlighted the precarious security situation, registering multiple FIRs over threats. He urged the nation to consider the impact of terrorism on elections, emphasizing the need to address the concerns of regions facing increased violence.
In response to the resolution, BAP Senator Manzoor Ahmed acknowledged the deteriorating security and economic situation but stressed the importance of not ignoring the threat of terrorism.
The resolution passed amidst a backdrop of rising security concerns, with senators divided over the necessity and implications of delaying the elections. The Election Commission is expected to respond promptly to the Senate’s resolution and engage with stakeholders to address their concerns.
