Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has been awarded the Cinema for Peace Dove Award for Women’s Empowerment at the Cinema for Peace Gala 2025 for her documentary Diane Von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge.
The award, which recognises films that showcase the resilience and empowerment of women, was first introduced by actor and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman in 2013. This year’s honour was presented at the prestigious 75th Berlin International Film Festival.
Obaid-Chinoy’s documentary celebrates the life and legacy of legendary fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, highlighting her journey as an entrepreneur, cultural icon, and champion for women’s rights. The film, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival and was released on Hulu in June 2024, received widespread acclaim for its powerful storytelling.
“Diana’s story is one of courage, determination, and self-belief — a testament to the fight for women’s rights that is constantly challenged by those seeking to hold us back,” said Obaid-Chinoy. “Through this film, we celebrate not just her life, but the universal truth that women can achieve anything when they embrace their true selves.”
A Night of Celebrating Changemakers
The Cinema for Peace Gala 2025 also honoured Sir Bob Geldof for his lifelong humanitarian efforts, commemorating 40 years of Live Aid, Do They Know It’s Christmas, and We Are the World. Renowned actor Antonio Banderas was also among this year’s honorees.
Past recipients of the Cinema for Peace awards include Pope Francis, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and Dame Helen Mirren. The organisation has long been dedicated to celebrating films that tackle global humanitarian, social, and political challenges, collaborating with influential figures such as Angelina Jolie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Charlize Theron, Sean Penn, and Nelson Mandela.
The event further cemented Obaid-Chinoy’s reputation as a filmmaker who uses cinema as a tool for social change, reinforcing her commitment to telling stories that inspire, empower, and uplift women worldwide.
