Karachi has witnessed a devastating surge in traffic-related fatalities in 2024, with nearly 500 people losing their lives in accidents across the city. A recent heart-wrenching incident near Korangi Nasser Jump highlights the gravity of the situation.
In this tragic case, a 5-month-old child—born to his parents after 13 years of marriage—lost his life due to the poor condition of the road. The father, Abdul Hamid, shared with the media that the damaged road caused him to lose control of his motorcycle. His infant son fell from his mother’s lap and was tragically run over by a trailer following behind.
Adding to the tragedy, the child’s uncle pointed out that the road’s dilapidated condition is worsened by encroachments from nearby shops, which have occupied half of the road. This, combined with the heavy traffic allowed on Korangi Road despite restrictions during the day, has turned the area into a hotspot for accidents.
Local residents claim that such incidents have become routine on Korangi Road. Yet, despite the alarming rise in fatalities, no significant measures have been taken to improve road safety.
This year’s grim statistics emphasize the urgent need for authorities to address road maintenance, enforce traffic regulations, and ensure the safety of Karachi’s citizens.
