Paris, August 14, 2024 — Sifan Hassan from the Netherlands has won the gold medal in the marathon at the Paris Olympics 2024. She finished with a record time of 2 hours, 22 minutes, and 55 seconds. This victory makes her the first athlete to win medals in all three long-distance running events—5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, and marathon—at the same Olympics.
Hassan’s incredible achievement has been widely celebrated. After the race, she shared her excitement, saying, “I feel like I am dreaming… At the end, I thought, ‘This is just a 100m sprint. Come on, Sifan. One more. Just feel it, like someone who sprints 200m.'”
Her win was also notable because she wore a hijab while accepting her medal, sending a powerful message of inclusivity and diversity in sports.
