Karachi, July 26, 2024 — The Sindh government has announced a significant policy shift by granting deputy commissioners the authority to issue firearm licenses, effective August 1, 2024. This decision comes through a new notification issued on Friday.
The notification states, “With the approval of the Minister for Home, Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Criminal Prosecution, Sindh, the ban on the issuance of arms licenses at deputy commissioner offices in the province is hereby lifted with effect from August 01, 2024.”
This move reverses a decision made by the caretaker government last year, which had previously stripped deputy commissioners of their authority to issue such licenses.
The provincial government’s latest action is seen as a strategic response to ongoing security concerns and public demands for easier access to firearm licenses. By decentralizing the process and placing it in the hands of local deputy commissioners, the Sindh government aims to streamline and expedite the licensing procedure for citizens across the province.
This change is expected to facilitate a more efficient and accessible approach to firearm licensing, addressing both public needs and security considerations.
